I have always heard that to truly appreciate Dave Matthews' music you had to experience it live in person. With that in mind, we made our way to a baseball field in Bricktown on a cool summer evening and watched as he filled our eyes and ears with his grand style. The sun sunk into night as he eased into "Seek Up" and the twilight ushered in one jam after another. Time was hard to gauge as each tune lingered for 10 to 15 minutes a piece and had the crowd mesmerized with his scratchy vocals and nonsensible mumblings in between.
Two of the best performances of the night were cover songs of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" and Madness' "Burning Down the House" which literally shook the house and had everyone on their feet. Nothing could've prepared me for the opportunity though to see my favorite song by a long shot, when he carefully pickled his way into "Halloween" before erupted into the harsh, honest vocals. Before that night, he had only played the song about his ex-girlfriend 7 times in seven years, but started playing it 2 weeks before our show and played it every show up until the OKC show. It was a fitting end to a great night with friends and good music.
