Red, White, larger than life, icons fill the stage, first Jack then Meg, then the music from behind, 5 mics, carefully organized across the stage, Jack unleashes his vocals on the closest target, Meg taps happily along, and the show has begun. It takes two full songs (the second of which being "hardest button to button") for me to shift focus from the visual aspect of the show to the audio mastery of Jack's guitar. Set in front of a microphone, he has his way; but to the axe he humbly follows like a limber child being pulled by the leash of some unruly canine. Songs known were few, but the tone remained brilliantly consistent -- save two escapes for Meg's solo and Jack's "back to school" melody from the White Blood Cells album which were brilliant in a whole different light. And I left a little disappointed that they didn't play some of my favs like "Fell in Love with a girl" or "I smell a rat", but satisfied in seeing such an enigmatic duo perform for me and my friends.
