It's been almost two years, since eleven of us went to the Bronco Bowl in Fort Worth to see one of the most promising new bands of recent memory (read review). This time around, Coldplay decided to play right here in OKC at the Civic Center on a Saturday night. Anyone who lives here, knows we don't get many shows and the ones we do are usually in the middle of the week. So, my good friend Tim got on the phone last December and bought a whole slew of tickets and we were in for one of the best nights in recent memory for myself.
We started out over at Dibble's for a quick pre-party, then made our way downtown. The night started out magical, as I saw Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips in the Will Call line at the Civic Center. I said "What's Up Wayne" as I was chatting with Dibble on his cell, who was just explaining that he saw him pass by going in. Wayne returned with a nod, and it wasn't until afterwards that I realized I was wearing his concert shirt, that I kinda freaked out a little and did a little jig. I know that Wayne and Chris are friends, and have even collaborated together a few times. Heck, Chris told us in Dallas that he wrote Yellow for Wayne, so I was already getting visions of the two of them playing together on stage. But I digress..
Ron Sexsmith played a short set, but was a nice opener for the band. Coldplay started with "Politik" and an amazing array of strobing lights switching to blue for the slow parts of the song. They continued to mix lights and up tempo together for the next 3 songs, before slowing down with "Trouble", to which Chris complimented OKC for giving props to a song they had written across the ocean over 2 years ago. Chris seemed excited like he was in the first show just to be leading a great rock band, dancing about on stage and really rocking whether he was on the piano or the guitar... as testimont to the fact that he broke strings in both of the two following songs. "Don't Panic" started with a heavy drum intro, before going into the familiar "we live in a beautiful world, yeah we do, yeah we do".
Having an idea of their upcoming setlist, I turned to Michelle before "Everything's Not Lost" and said we were up for a sing-a-long. Chris sat at the piano and preached to us about his demons, improving for the hometown crowd with "if you ever feel neglected, if you think that all is lost, just remember you live in the same city as the Flaming Lips, the 2nd greatest band in the world", to which the crowd just erupted... finishing with the crowd participation at the end, which makes me think this might be their version of "The Forest" as a song which will be played live at all their shows.
